Airbloc Energy Efficient Air Curtains Offer the Right Solution for Coach Station

Airbloc, part of AmbiRad Ltd, Europe’s leading developer and manufacturer of energy efficient HVAC systems has recently completed a project for National Express in Digbeth, Birmingham.

Digbeth Coach Station now known as Birmingham Coach Station is a major coach interchange offering services to destinations all over the UK, Belfast and Dublin and recently benefited from a £15m refurbishment and is now home to National Express’ headquarters.

The previous building had eight gates and two external entrances that required protection from the ingress of cold outside air.  The problem was keeping the cold air out and complementing the buildings architectural style by having low visual impact.  There were eight coach boarding gates which meant a high volume of cold air was entering the building whilst passengers were boarding.

Airbloc were able to offer the ideal solution with the use of LPHW heated air curtains.  They run on low speed when the doors are shut and the fan speed rises when doors open.  The heat output is controlled by a temperature sensor on each doorway to ensure the correct comfort conditions within the space.

Airbloc provided eight bespoke, 2.4m wide AC units which were powder coated to the exact colour of the doors to look like part of the door frame and were manufactured to the exact width of the door surround to give an impressive architectural effect and the air curtains on the door entrances were also supplied in colour match finish.

Airbloc energy efficient air curtains have helped National express by drastically reducing the ingress of outside air.  This has helped to maintain the internal climate of the coach station, provided significant cost savings and delivered vastly improved staff and customer comfort.
